Presenter: Arlene Inouye,
Coordinator and Founder of Coalition Against Militarism in the Schools
Inouye is the coordinator and founder of
the Coalition Against Militarism in the Schools. She is a Spanish Bilingual
Speech and Language Specialist in East Los Angeles,
who has spent the past 35 years working for social justice in the areas of
militarism, education, multiculturalism, human relations, and parent/community
involvement. Inouye currently serves on the steering committee of the National
Network Opposed to the Militarization of Youth, the Service Women’s Action
Network, and the Trinational Coalition to Defend Public Education as well as
being an active member of the United Teachers Los Angeles, California Teachers
Association and the National Education Association. Inouye
has received such awards as the California Teacher 2006 Human Rights Award, the
Lotie Wexler Peace, Justice Award in 2006, and Citizens Action for Peace
International Women’s Day Award in 2008. In todays lecture Inouye talks about how the military presence and influence continues to
dramatically increase in schools across America, on the organizing model of
CAMS, and the development of the counter recruitment movement to demilitarize
