About Richmond Young Adult Professionals
Wayne County Young Adult Professionals was a direct action step established from the Wayne County Visioning Process. In 2002, more than 1200 residents participated in sharing their thoughts and dreams for Wayne County. One of the concerns listed was the “brain drain” of Wayne County and how young adults were not provided activities, events, connection and job opportunities.
In May 2003, a group of young professionals lead by Mike Nixon through the Fun Action Team decided to create a Young Adult Network. The original purpose was to create a fun and interactive bi-monthly event that would connect young professionals as well as inform young professionals of activities and events happening in Wayne County.
The first event in July 2003 was successful with 31 in attendance. During 2004, under the leadership of Phil Quinn, YAP was hosting 50 to 70 young adults at the bi-monthly events as well as the establishing volunteer opportunities for our young adults. The vision expanded in 2005 under the leadership of Brad VanVleet with the creation of a quarterly newsletter,
expanding the YAP Committee, establishing a mission statement and the beginning of a web-site. By the end of 2005, more than 300 young adults had participated in the young adult network nights, Wine Festival, volunteer opportunities or receiving our newsletters.
Where does this take Wayne County? One can only believe that the more young adults that have connection with one another, volunteer opportunities, leadership development and a chance to be apart of their community, we will see the “brain drain” move to “brain gain”.
If you are thinking about being a part of this great opportunity, what are you waiting for? Jump in and begin to be a part of Wayne County's future.
